Myotherapy

HOW CAN MYOTHERAPY AND REMEDIAL MASSAGE HELP YOU?

Myotherapy can be used for a number injuries or conditions that result from strains, sprains, occupational injuries, postural and recreational stresses, emotional stress, incorrect ergonomics, faulty biomechanics, muscular imbalances, traumatic or overuse injury or chronic neuromuscular or musculoskeletal illness or disease. These underlying causes may have symptoms such as general aches and pains, headaches, neck or back pain, joint stiffness, neurological symptoms or reduced flexibility.

MYOTHERAPY AND REMEDIAL MASSAGE TECHNIQUES THAT WE USE

We use specific soft tissue techniques such as deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, stretching, dry needling, and heat therapies. Rehabilitation of the injury or condition can be done through exercise and/or stretching prescription and corrective advice. An initial Myotherapy consultation will involve a brief medical history, presenting injury history, skeletal structure and postural assessment, range of movement testing, joint mobility, muscle strength and neurological testing.

Myotherapy (muscular therapy) is the assessment and management of joint, soft tissue and muscle dysfunction that causes pain and affects movement and mobility.

A combination of the following modalities may be used:

ORTHOPEDIC TESTING
Diagnostic methods are used in which a range of tests are performed.  These assess the structural and possible aggravating activities that have any correlation to the condition presented.

POSTURAL ASSESSMENT
Musculoskeletal alignment is observed to identify structural abnormalities, muscle imbalances and possible aggravating activities that have any correlation to the condition presented.

MYOFASCIAL DRY NEEDLING
Myofascial dry needles are acupuncture needles inserted into muscles to de-active Trigger Points that refer pain locally or to other areas of the body. This also increases blood flow and accelerates healing. It is Western Medicine and it is thought that Dry Needling also inhibits abnormal nerve activity which can cause focal regions of muscle tension that is often present in chronic conditions.
NOTE: If you do not like needles then an alternative would be Chinese Cupping and/or Laser.

SOFT TISSUE MANIPULATION
Hands on treatment involving palpation, specific deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and cross fibre friction.  These techniques help to deactivate trigger point referral, reduce pain, align scar tissue formation, reduce adhesions and spasms, relieve muscle tension and reduce pain.
This treatment also provides benefits to the vascular, lymphatic and nervous system re-habilitation.

ELECTROTHERAPY STIMULATION
A tens machine is used to stimulate cellular activity and accelerate healing.  Muscles and tissues are stimulated to penetrate deeper tissues when combined with Myofascial Dry Needling.

EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION
Exercise prescription is given to the patient to do at home.  Specific stretching programs are written for individuals to increase self management of conditions and prevent reoccurrence of symptoms.
